The Living Landscape Initiative exists to protect landscapes and inspire a renewed connection to the land in the heart of coastal California. A passionate group of five land conservation organizations in and around Silicon Valley has come together to protect the unique natural benefits and striking beauty that nourish the area’s social and economic vitality. The Land Trust of Santa Cruz County, The Nature Conservancy, Peninsula Open Space Trust, Save the Redwoods League and Sempervirens Fund share a vision of giving our communities—both now and in the future—an environment that supports quality of life through clean air and water, landscape preservation, farms and working landscapes, habitat protection, biodiversity, natural aesthetics, recreational access and regional economic vibrancy. The collaborative is designed to take advantage of each organization’s individual expertise to achieve these common goals.
To create and maintain a vibrant, sustainable living landscape in the heart of coastal California.
HOW TO HELP
The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation provided an initial $15 million grant to the Initiative to be used to support protection and stewardship of conservation lands. The grant is designed to help the Initiative leverage an additional $45 million in private and public funding through each of the five member organizations’ own fundraising activities. You can help meet this challenge by supporting the work of the member organizations below. On projects of mutual interest, one organization will typically play the lead role. Learn more at News or visit the members’ websites below for additional information. Thank you for your support!
LAND TRUST OF SANTA CRUZ COUNTY
The Land Trust of Santa Cruz County is dedicated to protecting and caring for the lands that make Santa Cruz so special—including working lands, like farms and timberlands, and natural lands with high conservation value—thus protecting water supplies, wildlife habitats, and open space.
THE NATURE CONSERVANCY
PENINSULA OPEN SPACE TRUST (POST)
POST gives permanent protection to the beauty, character and diversity of the San Francisco Peninsula and Santa Cruz Mountain range. POST encourages the use of these lands for natural resource protection, wildlife habitat, public recreation and agriculture for people here now and for future generations.
SAVE THE REDWOODS LEAGUE
Since 1918, Save the Redwoods League has protected ancient redwood forests and redwood ecosystems to ensure that current and future generations can feel the awe and peace these precious natural wonders inspire. The League also saves redwoods because they are rare—their natural range is only in central and northern California and southern Oregon— and because they are Earth’s tallest and some of the oldest and most massive living things.
Sempervirens Fund protects and permanently preserves redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) forests, wildlife habitat, watersheds, and other important natural features of California’s Santa Cruz Mountains, and encourages people to appreciate and enjoy this environment.
